Christmas Tree Mailers (or, Crafting in Your Underwear) | Wrap Story

Ah, friends, mailing gifts is a pain. I love gift wrapping, but gift wrapping PLUS preparing gifts for the mail confounds and perplexes my holiday-addled brain.

So I decided to try something different. N and I took some time last week to decorate these recycled bubble mailers for my grandparents. He had a great time crafting in his underwear, punching 'ornaments' with my circle punch and helping to glue them on the trees. (For the record, I was clothed.)

I enjoyed breaking out some of the pretty paper I bought on our last trip to Japan.

Inside we slipped Christmas cards and some handmade tulle potscrubbers. These scrubby wonders are a dying art. As far as I can tell, only Japanese-American grandmas know how to make them, and my Japanese-American grandmas actually never learned! I hope it gives them a smile that I'm trying to keep the tradition alive.

This Wrap Story is part of a series documenting every present I’ve wrapped since the launch of The Gifted Blog. Click here to see them all!

  1. Í really like your trees! What a great idea:-)

    Merry christmas from Denmark

  2. Love the bubble wrappers! Also very enamored with your handmade tulle pot-scrubbers. Never seen them made more beautifully. Definitely need to learn how to make those. Have a great holiday season, Charissa.

  3. I'm starting to think you could literally do anything with tulle and I would just swoon. Those mailers are so cute. You put my holiday mailing to shame. I do a lot of care packages for the troops and you're making me think I should put in a bit more effort to make the outside of the box snazzy.

  4. pretty and festive. i used to decorate the outside of mailing packages and got out of the habit. i'm feeling convicted to stop being so lazy and live more inspired.

I saw Greg post about you in the LA Times article and found the link to your blog. Congrats and thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Hello,
I just found your blog and am getting sooo many ideas! Thanks! Do you think you could post the tutorial for your pot scrubber? It looks really interesting and is different than all the other ones out there.
    Thanks again!

    1. Vanessa, what a compliment. So glad you are enjoying the blog; please visit anytime!

I've thought about making a tutorial for the potscrubbers, but I've ultimately been stumped because I don't have a great space to photograph it. : ( And it's kind of funny, b/c of the volume of the tulle I usually end up making them on the floor. I really like them, though, and would love to share how to make them someday. I will keep my eyes open for the right set-up!
