A Dying Breed | Wrap Story

A couple years ago Macy's made headlines for shutting down its gift wrapping departments in all but five of their 810 U.S. department stores. These days stores that offer extra services like gift wrapping seem to be a dying breed.

That's why I was pleasantly surprised to see the following as I purchased a book through the website of our local bookstore, Vroman's:
Free gift wrapping? Where I could have a say in the wrapping paper? I had to try it.

The book we bought was a gift for Z, the baby of our friends from church. They describe him as Nigerian and white-American and he is a precious guy! You might recognize this wonderful book from my gift guide for books for mixed race kids.
I opted for in-store pick up to avoid paying for shipping. We took a family stroll to Vroman's and found the will call window.

Lo and behold, there was our book, waiting for us wrapped in a cute whale-print gift wrap. Since I'd already paid online, they handed us the book and we were on our way!
How great would this service be for harried folks on their way to a birthday party? Place your order online the week before, then swing by the bookshop on your way to the party. Piece of cake!

Kudos to Vroman's for offering such a quality service on the house. (For comparison, Macy's gift wrapping ranged from $5.95 to $10.95 depending on the size of the gift.)

Z, may you grow into a full and healthy appreciation for your heritage. We love how God made you!
